GENERAL The High School at Marist Brothers Linmeyer functions on the north side of the campus, although facilities on the south side are also used. The College operates on a seven day cycle with six lessons per day. The lesson times vary from forty five minutes to fifty five minutes. Each morning is started with prayer and meeting in the staff room and a school assembly in our quad where birthdays and announcements are made. The students have one thirty five minute break per day so that they can relax and eat their lunch in a tranquil environment. Our catering co-ordinator provides a variety of health foods with a different menu each day for our students. Sports practices and cultural activities begin each afternoon at 14h30. Subject tours and sports tours take place during the year and depend on seasons and fixtures. A co-curriculuar computer course is offered by Futurekids at the High School. Skills certification takes place. ACADEMIC Marist Brothers Linmeyer follows the IEB curriculum in the High School. The GETC phase which begins in grade 7 in the Primary School continues into High School with the following learning areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, Economic management Sciences, Technology, Dramatic Arts and Life Orientation. Students write the GDE (IEB) GETC exams at the end of grade 9. All of our students continue with the FET phase of their education and select from the following options: English (Home Language), Afrikaans (First Additional Language), Life Orientation, and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy are compulsory. Four other subjects may be selected from Drama, Visual Arts or Design, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, History, Physical Science, Life Science, Computer Applications Technology and Civil Technology. Normal promotion criteria apply for the above courses. Assessment involves continuous assessment throughout the year plus two sets of formal examinations one in July and one in November. CULTURAL Our school provides a number of cultural activities which are essential for the holistic development of our students. We provide opportunities in debating, eisteddfod, public speaking, chess, music group and drama. Students participating in these activities are expected to enter competitions in order to be graded for various achievement levels. Service awards are also made to students who make significant contributions to the life of the school in some way or other. SPORT Introduction Our school offers a wide range of sports in order to give as many students as possible the chance to develop their own individual strengths. Although we do not compete at high levels with some of our team sports, we still provide opportunities for our sportsmen and women to attend trials for selection for provincial teams. Many of our students participating in individual sports do exceptionally well and often compete at provincial and national levels. Our main aim is to encourage as many students as possible to participate in at least one extramural activity per term. Sports available at the High School: ARCHERY Archery began in 2000 at Marist Brothers Linmeyer. Initially a few interested learners and staff met each Friday afternoon to shoot a few arrows. Very soon we developed huge interest in the sport and set up our own range. From the start there were a few archers who took the sport very seriously and began shooting in provincial and national tournaments. With more and more interest, we had to organize another practice afternoon and soon established a Schools’ League competing against archers from other schools. Presently, some of our thirty plus archers have excelled in ability with three having received their provincial and national colours for their disciplines in both recurve and compound styles. Our school has hosted numerous competitions including the Gauteng Field Archery Championships in 2004 and 2005 with competitors (both juniors and adults) arriving from all over South Africa to compete. We offer incentives and rewards for skilled shooting which include badges, half colour scrolls and full colour ties. We encourage our archers to attempt most disciplines including indoor, field, target and 3D. ATHLETICS The athletics team almost doubled in size in 2003 a clear indication that our learners are proud to represent their school in a sports team. A number of our athletes have achieved first and second places in the Private Schools league. We offer training in both field and track events. We are very proud of the athletes in the team. The coaching staff are enthusiastic and dedicated and we are able to participate in a respectable and professional league. BASKETBALL Recently, we have built a new basketball court to accommodate the huge group of interested students who are committed to this game. Both girls’ and boys’ teams have done particularly well to achieve recognition at the provincial level. We offer professional coaching to our students by a highly qualified coach. CRICKET With cricket becoming more competitive at Marist Brothers Linmeyer, some of our players also play social club cricket. Four of our players were chosen for South East Gauteng this year. The 1st Cricket team went on tour at the end of last year and played against schools on the South Coast. For the 2nd year now we have participated in the “Johnny Waite Competition”. This is without doubt one of the most prestigious events in Gauteng, and a highlight for any student cricketer! We are very proud to say that we went through to the quarter finals but lost narrowly against Hoёrskool Volkskool by 12 runs. They won the league. During the season our teams play many friendly matches with the emphasis on participation. CROSS COUNTRY The athletes had a successful season. Many of our Senior Girls were regularly placed in the top ten; as a result they won the Southern District. Our Junior Boys were placed 2nd in the league. Both these teams participated in the Inter-District Championships held at Emmerentia Dam. We did not make the top 3 but the athletes acquitted themselves well. Thirteen of our athletes represented Southern in various age categories. Two of our senior Girls were placed in the top 10 and 2 of them in the top 20. Well done! The success of the season was a result of hard work and commitment by the athletes. GOLF The scratch league of 2005 was a particularly hard act to follow! Not only did we lose many of our senior players to matrix, but these pupils were the strength in the team. This year we started basically with a new team, having only one player with a handicap below 10. The fact that the league works off of a scratch score, put our pupils with handicaps of 16 and 20 at a distinct disadvantage. A friendly league will takes place in the last term where the players play according to their handicap. HOCKEY Hockey at Marist Brothers Linmeyer has become very competitive, with many teams competing in the leagues. A number of players are selected each year to play in the trials with some making in to the provincial level. Each year the under fourteens are coached during a beginners’ tournament. The first team and three reserves were taken on tour to Kwa-Zulu-Natal south coast for a Hockey clinic and tournament. The girls enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot. The group of Olympic players taking the clinic was well-informed and the girls enjoyed the way in which they were coached. The team building and skills training was invaluable as was the teaching of rules. NETBALL Once again Marist Brothers Linmeyer has had a very successful year on the netball field. We entered the Private School League, and although the competition is great, it has forced the standard of our netball to improve. We are playing many schools that have over 6oo girls in the school. In total, each week we have over 60 girls participating at practices and matches. This year our U16 netball team won their section of the league and went on to win the semi final, losing narrowly in the finals. This is a remarkable achievement and we are very proud of them. Two of our players were chosen at regional trials to go through to the next round. They then went to the second round of the GDE trials and they were both chosen to represent the South Gauteng Netball Team. Each week half our teams play at home and the other half play away. This year we played at the Saheti Tournament, and although it was the coldest day of the year, the girls enjoyed the day. The tournament hosted at Marist Brothers Linmeyer was also a great success. RUGBY The 2006 rugby season enjoyed at Marist Brothers Linmeyer this year has possibly been our best to date! We were able to field 4 teams for the first time ever (under 14/15 combined team, a under 16 as well as a 1st and 2nd open team). Unfortunately none of our opposition could provide league games for our combined under 14/15 team, so all their matches were friendlies even so, this team only conceded one game the whole season. The under 16 team have made a remarkable turn around in the last 2 years from not winning one game two seasons ago, to emerging victorious in all their league games and ending the season as league winners.
We were able to take two open sides down to the Margate Sport School. The commitment and dedication seen on this tour against some very strong opposition just reinforced our expectations of this team. These tough warm up games provided the boys with a solid foundation to start off the league. Our 1st team continued to play good, hard rugby and their efforts were rewarded with a 2nd place on the log and a win in the finals with a nail biting 18 17 victory over Reddam House.

SOCCER Once again Marist Brothers Linmeyer participated in the Private Schools League, entering teams in four age groups. During the pre-season warmup, it was clear that based on turn out at training, Marist Brothers Linmeyer stood a good chance of winning the league. Another important factor, which may have given us the advantage, is that most of the players play club football some at a very high level The under fifteen team tried hard during matches, and produced some good individual play at times, but they lacked much tactical understanding especially in positional play. This is a very important principle which must be mastered as competition becomes more complex and physical in the older age groups. The two teams who produced the most consistent effort were the under fourteen and under sixteen teams. Both teams won their respective Leagues, with the under fourteens losing only one game and the under sixteen’s winning all matches in a very hard fought League. SQUASH This being our third year, we had a very good season once again. We had 5 girls teams- and 6 boys teams this year. The U/16A girls came 1st in their league. The U 19/A team came 2nd and all other teams came 3rd. The U/16A team was invited to play Districts after the August holidays and was also invited to the Gauteng League Squash Awards Evening the 1st August. It is the second year, that wee have been invited to this prestige's awards evening! SWIMMING In 1999, our own 8-lane swimming pool finally became a reality. Since then our swimming team has produced some excellent results. Only recently (2004), the boys and girls teams both finished 2nd at the Inter Catholic Gala against seven other schools. In 2003 the team won the Division II ‘A’ league and a decision was made to move up to Division I. The swimmers have made a huge effort to meet this challenge. The swimming team had to double in size to meet the new criteria. We are hoping to encourage more students to join the swimming team. The team finished 2nd in 2004 and 2005 at the Inter High Gala and so we had to remain in the ‘G’ league. In January this year, with the help of Wesley Williams (specialist coach), the staff and swimmers made the commitment to win the Inter High Gala in March, (which Marist Brothers Linmeyer hosted at home). The 2006 swimming season was an excellent one with the team winning most of the weekly galas and of course the Inter High. We have finally been promoted to the ‘F’ league. Well done swimmers!!! Marist Brothers Linmeyer has a well-maintained swimming pool and surrounding area with shade covering for both spectators and swimmers. Our resident coach, Wesley Williams has been a great asset to the school with the help of our enthusiastic staff. TENNIS Boy’s tennis has grown tremendously since last year starting the year off with 27 players compared to the 14 players in 2005. With such tremendous growth, we were also fortunate to introduce a boy’s second tennis team into the league. Both league teams did exceptionally well; the A team ending second in their section. The B team also did very well, ending 3rd in their league. The girls also had a good season. Both teams did exceptionally well and represented the school with pride. The juniors won 2 and lost 4 of their games and the seniors won 5 and lost only 1. The Annual Southern Suburbs District Tennis Tournament, was held again during March and April and we were pleased that we had 3 girls and 6 boys who participated in this event. Eight players received their district colours during the selections at this tournament. Our school also has social tennis over the weekend where members of the community can enjoy a few games. WATERPOLO Waterpolo began in 2005 as small group of 12 very competent swimmers who were admirably enthusiastic, but generally clueless about water polo. After a fun season of learning and having light shed on the mysteries of the rules and finer details of the game, January 2006 saw the return of these seniors as well as the influx of a number of juniors, swelling the water polo club to over 30 talented members. At all times throughout the season, the polo team showed true sportsmanship and were excellent ambassadors for Marist Brothers Linmeyer. The teams have played a few friendly matches against local schools and have done very well to win these matches. We hope to compete in a league this coming season. |
